A Little Advice for Parents Bringing Siblings to the Session

If you are planning to include older siblings in your newborn session, my biggest piece of advice is simple. Try not to stress.

You know your child best. Some children love being involved right away, while others may need a few minutes to warm up to the idea. Both are completely normal.

If it helps you feel more prepared, bringing a small snack, a favorite toy, or even a tiny treat can be helpful as a backup. A little encouragement can go a long way. That said, most siblings cooperate beautifully with a bit of positive reinforcement and a relaxed, playful atmosphere.

During the session, I keep things light and fun so children feel comfortable rather than pressured. When kids feel at ease, the sweetest and most genuine moments tend to happen naturally.

Tips for Beautiful and Stress-Free Family Moments

Welcoming a new baby into the family is one of life’s most meaningful milestones. While newborn portraits often focus on the tiny details of a new baby, including siblings in the session adds an extra layer of connection and storytelling. Some of the most treasured images families receive are the quiet, loving moments between a new baby and their big brother or sister.

As a newborn photographer who works with many growing families, I love helping siblings feel comfortable, excited, and included during these sessions. With a little preparation and the right approach, sibling photos can become some of the most heartfelt images in your gallery.

Here are a few tips to help ensure sibling moments are beautiful, natural, and stress free.

Prepare Older Siblings Ahead of Time

Before the session, it helps to talk with your child about the baby and what will happen during photos. Let them know they will get to hold, snuggle, or sit next to their new sibling while photos are taken.

This simple preparation builds excitement and helps them feel important in the process rather than unsure or overwhelmed.

You might say something like:
"The photographer is going to take pictures of you with your baby brother or sister because you are such an important part of the family."

Children respond well when they feel included and valued.

Schedule Sibling Photos Early in the Session

Young children have limited patience for long photo sessions, especially when a new baby is involved. For that reason, sibling portraits are typically photographed first unless baby is perfectly ready for solo portraits.

Once we capture those sweet sibling moments, older children can take a break, play, or relax while the rest of the newborn portraits are created.

This keeps the experience fun and positive for everyone.

Keep the Mood Relaxed and Playful

Children do not need to sit perfectly still or pose formally to create beautiful images. Often the most meaningful photos happen in natural interactions.

A gentle kiss on the baby’s forehead, a curious peek at tiny fingers, or a proud big sibling smile can create truly timeless portraits.

I guide children gently throughout the session so they feel comfortable while still allowing their natural personalities to shine.

Choose Simple, Coordinated Clothing

Soft, neutral tones photograph beautifully and keep the focus on the connection between siblings. Whites, creams, soft pastels, and light textures work wonderfully in newborn photography.

For siblings, classic pieces like:

• Simple dresses
• Neutral sweaters
• Linen or cotton outfits
• Smocked or Peter Pan collar styles

create a timeless look that complements the baby without distracting from the moment.

Prioritize Safety and Comfort

Safety is always the most important part of newborn photography. Sibling poses are carefully guided and supported to ensure the baby is comfortable and secure at all times.

Many sibling portraits are created with the baby safely swaddled or lying on a soft surface while a sibling sits nearby. These setups allow for beautiful connection while maintaining the baby’s safety.

Let the Connection Shine

Some siblings are instantly affectionate, while others are shy or curious. Both reactions are perfectly normal and can lead to beautiful photographs.

The goal is never perfection. The goal is connection.

A quiet moment of curiosity, a soft touch, or a proud smile can tell the story of a growing family in the most genuine way.

The Result: Images Your Family Will Treasure

Including siblings in newborn portraits creates a visual story of the very beginning of a lifelong relationship. These early images often become some of the most meaningful photographs families look back on years later.

They capture the moment a child becomes a big brother or big sister. They capture the love that begins on the very first days.

And those moments are truly priceless.

If you are expecting and planning newborn portraits, I would love to help document this beautiful season for your family.
